Thelonius Punk

Thelonious Punk are returning to play at this year’s jazz fest.

The group plays materials from the avant-garde 50’s/60’s jazz scene ranging from swing, bebop, funk, fusion and latin. Their music is heavily influenced by the styles of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Thelonious Monk.

The band was formed in 2009 involving a core group of local Bay of Islands musicians with the occasional guest players.

This year the line up features : Bevan O’Brien on drums Reese Helmendollar on alto/tenor sax Bryn Van Vliet on alto sax Barry Wilcox on keyboards Aaron Wright on guitar John Drake on acoustic upright bass.

It is Modern Jazz as it should sound.
